Houston’s first dedicated retirement community was conceived and birthed in 1949 by a handful of committed Houstonians. These women, representing several local church congregations, soon rallied an entire city behind their cause.
The women persuaded Houston Press reporter Andy Anderson to keep their mission in the public eye. News of plans for Holly Hall drew interest from many prominent citizens, including Texas wildcatter Glenn McCarthy, who donated Holly Hall’s present 20-acre site in early 1950.
On March 23, 1952, Holly Hall Christian Retirement Community was formally opened, adding “years to life and life to years” for its first 50 residents, and for the hundreds that would follow in decades to come.
