As spring rolls into Texas, many people are throwing open their windows and airing out the rugs to prepare for the warm sunshine ahead of them! At Holly Hall, we’re helping our senior living residents prepare for spring with a little spring cleaning. If you’re unsure of where to start with your own home, we’re offering up a few helpful tips to get you started and keep you safe while cleaning.

Senior Living Cleaning Risks

Before we jump into our spring cleaning suggestions and tips, it’s important to recognize safety risks for independent living seniors. We understand that you want to be independent and rely on yourself as opposed to others. You can still do this, but it’s vital that you exercise caution when it comes to cleaning your space. Avoid doing things that require you to climb a ladder or stand on a chair. Don’t attempt to lift up or move pieces of furniture that might be too heavy. Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be strenuous and frankly, it shouldn’t be. For added safety, clean your home while someone else is nearby just in case something were to happen.

Cleaning Tips for Independent Living

Over the course of a year, things can get dirty and need a good scrub in your senior living apartment. While you’re making your list of things to clean this spring, look around every room for hidden places where dirt and grime often accumulate. Write down these areas so you can remember to go back and clean them later. Head to your kitchen and look through your refrigerator. Is there anything expired that needs to be thrown away? Should the shelves be cleaned? Anytime there’s food involved, things tend to get messy.

If organizing is usually part of your spring cleaning routine, throw open your linen closet and remove your linens so you can wash, dry, and neatly fold them. Remove any linens that you no longer use or want and donate them to local animal shelters. Also, consider putting a few scented freshening packets inside the closet for a crisp, clean smell.

For those in our senior living community, Holly Hall offers a cleaning service to residents who would prefer to let a professional take care of their spring cleaning.
