Summer Safety Tips for Senior Living

Posted on: April 24th, 2017 by hhmin

Houston-area residents are no strangers to the hot, humid summers that roll around each year. Even so, the summer months are still something people look forward to every year. However, for older members of the Houston community and those who live in our senior living community, summer can represent some unique challenges to the health and wellness of their everyday lives. If you’re enjoying Independent Living in Houston this summer, here are a few safety tips to make your summer more enjoyable.

Stay Hydrated Inside and Outside of Your Senior Living Home

Drinking the recommended daily water intake is so important to keeping your body healthy and functioning. Many older adults fall victim to severe dehydration, which often ends up putting them in the hospital for a short time. If you’re going to be outdoors, bring a water bottle with you to sip while you enjoy the sunshine. We love it when our residents are able to go outside and get fresh air, especially if they’re in our Skilled Nursing Facility!

Avoid Being in the Heat for Too Long

Heat exhaustion and heat strokes are very common in older adults. At our retirement community in Houston, we take every precaution to make sure none of our residents fall victim to it. On particularly hot days, we recommend only being outside for short periods of time or waiting until the hottest part of the day (usually the late afternoon) has passed. Summers are certainly meant to be enjoyed but you must be careful to not overexpose yourself to intense heat.

Apply Sunscreen Throughout the Day

Many of our residents enjoy taking walks during the day to get in some exercise and be with their neighbors. If you’re venturing out from your Independent Living cottage, apply a generous amount of sunscreen to any exposed skin. Sunburns can be particularly dangerous as you age as it can easily lead to sun poisoning.

Wear Breathable Fabrics Around Your Retirement Community

One of the best things you can do to keep cool is by wearing fabrics that are breathable and made of cotton. Retirees in our Houston senior living community are particularly fond of their Hawaiian print shirts and for good reason! They’re lightweight and super festive for the summer season.

Holly Hall Gives Back to the Community

A great senior living community should give residents opportunities to give back to others and meet new people. At Holly Hall Retirement Community, we host an annual Easter Egg Eggstravaganza for our residents and children in the Houston community. Our residents help out with the event and the kids bring so much energy and excitement to our retirement community. Each year, we have special activities for both residents and kids to do. Here are a few fun things we did his year to bring our community together.

Holly Hall Egg Bash

Days before the actual egg hunt, our residents get together and stuff plastic eggs with candy for the kids to find. They also dye traditional Easter eggs, make cards, and enjoy the fellowship with each other. This pre-egg hunt Independent Living activity is fun for residents and staff to do together. Activities like this gives our residents something to look forward to and helps keep them active.

Senior Living Community Egg Eggstravaganza

The day of the Easter egg hunt, our senior living residents help out with different activity stations. This year, our residents and staff hid over 300 eggs for kids in our community. We also hosted a sugar cookie making station with sprinkles, fun icing, and lots of different Easter-themed cookies for the kids to choose from with the help of our resident volunteers.

To work off all the energy from the Easter candy, we had a dance-off for the kids. Parents and residents alike enjoyed watching the children delight in the music. For the younger children, they were able to get photos with the Easter bunny.

Senior Community Events are Important for Everyone

People of all ages need strong community ties. Our assisted living community provides these ties through the events we host like our Easter Eggstravaganza. It gives residents a reason to get out of their rooms and join others in fellowship. Having things to look forward to and a purpose in life is incredibly important for mental health and we recognize and provide for this need in our residents.
