During the winter months, most people prefer to stay in their homes and keep warm as opposed to going outdoors and battling the chilly wind. For senior citizens living in retirement communities, getting out seems like even more of a chore. Part of living an active lifestyle is making sure you get out amongst friends to socialize. It’s easy to become complacent and stay in most days, but it isn’t good for you. Here are a few things you can do to maintain an active lifestyle this winter.

Plan a Weekly Bible Study Within The Senior Living Community

Starting up a weekly Bible study is a great way to get friends together while learning something in the process. There are many different types of studies to choose from that focus on various topics that will interest the whole group. Plan to meet up in someone’s apartment or in a common area at your senior living community. Fellowship like this can really boost everyone’s spirits and make the winter seem less daunting.

Take a Walk

While not easily done for some people, those who enjoy independent living should make time everyday to go outside and take a walk for some fresh air. Bring someone with you to chat with and share the experience. Bundle up with a cozy jacket and brew a warm cup of coffee to sip while on your walk. Fresh air is so important for your mental and physical health. If going outdoors doesn’t seem like something you’d enjoy, walk the halls with a friend everyday to get some exercise!

Find a Hobby to Share with Senior Living Residents

Some people have life-long hobbies, while others find them later in life. If you don’t have a hobby, consider finding something new to enjoy with other people. For some people, scrapbooking is a great creative outlet that’s fun to do with others. Get a group together and share memories, ideas, and fellowship while making something you and your family will cherish for years to come.

If crafting isn’t your thing, try something that will give you a mental challenge like chess. As people grow older, it’s important that they keep learning new things and developing their minds. Chess or other games of strategy, are a great way to do this!

Get Involved with the Assisted Living Community

Depending on your ability to do so, consider volunteering in the local community. Whether it’s simply sitting at a desk greeting visitors at a museum or something more active, get involved with a non-profit and stay busy! Keeping your mind and body active can significantly improve your health.
